July is quickly becoming one of the rainiest months yet! It feels like all it’s done recently is rain, but we don’t let this stop us.

At Dodleston Pre-School, our favourite saying is ‘There’s no such thing as bad weather, only unsuitable clothing’. This is why we always suggest you bring waterproof suits and wellies.

We make the most of the weather instead of letting it stop us. The rain only enhances our play, and we take the opportunity to jump in muddy puddles and collect rain water.

We managed a spot of gardening and tried to block the rain using wheelbarrows in a unique way. Then the children decided it would be a good idea to collect some rain to be used in the water play.

Our slide became a fun water slide and the puddles became part of our small world play.

Why playing in the rain is beneficial for children

Did you know that playing in the rain can actually have so many benefits for children?

Rain transforms our environment, creating puddles to jump in and mud to squelch in. It creates a whole new world for children, and helps to encourage their exploration and curiosity. It’s a sensory-rich experience that contributes to cognitive development.

Rainy playtime can even promote physical actiivity and develop motor skills. Jumping in puddles, running through wet grass, and navigating slippery surfaces challenge a child’s coordination and balance. These activities contribute to the development of gross motor skills, helping children to refine their movements and build strength.

The rain also serves as a natural stress-reliever, offering a refreshing and invigorating experience that can boost a child’s mood and overall wellbeing. It teaches them resilience and adaptability as they learn to embrace different weather conditions with enthusiasm.

This is why you’ll always find us outside at Dodleston Pre-School, even when it’s raining. Find out more about what we can offer your child.
