Forest School Inspired…

We are very excited to announce that due to many requests from parents we are hoping to operate on Wednesday afternoons. We do not have access to our main indoor provision therefore we would be delighted to offer a Forest school inspired session every Wednesday afternoon from 1pm to 3.15pm starting early in the New Year (child attendee numbers permitting)

Our Forest school inspired leader will be Katie. She will be supported by members of our core team at pre school – Jo, Heather, Natalie and Belinda.

A little bit about Katie and her forest school approach:

Katie is a qualified forest school teacher and has 20 years experience working with young children. The focus of her practice has been within Waldorf early years, which holds the principles of child led play, outdoor learning and respect for young children and their care at it’s heart. Katie was drawn to forest school because of it’s respect for the learner, the environment and allowing children to play freely. Katie loves working in the outdoors and enjoys bringing knowledge of the seasons and the outdoor environment in a gentle way to young children. Katie is delighted to become part of the team at Dodleston and as a past parent here she knows the community well.

What is Forest school?

Forest School has six key principles which ensure this approach is shared and used appropriately. These have been agreed by the Forest School community and are shared across the Forest School Association network of trainers.
It is a long-term process of regular sessions, rather than a one-off or infrequent visits; the cycle of planning, observation, adaptation and review.
It  takes place in a  natural environment to support the development of a relationship between the learner and the natural world.
It uses a range of learner-centred processes to create a community for being, development and learning.
It aims to promote the holistic development of all those involved, fostering resilient, confident, independent and creative learners.
It offers learners the opportunity to take supported risks appropriate to the environment and to themselves.
It is run by qualified Forest School practitioners who continuously maintain and develop their professional practice.
Forest School is a very specific approach and has clear outcomes that are not curricular-led.
Why Forest school inspired is for us
Forest School is a powerful and proven tool for use as part of education. In our view all outdoor learning is good, and finding the approach that best suits our learners, and pre school ethos is most important.
Some examples of activities we would be involved in: As with our own ethos at Dodleston, forest school is child led and in the early years free play and exploration are the main focus. The forest school teacher will bring seasonal activities such a camp fire cooking, seasonal crafts, gardening, nature walks, bug hunting, seasonal songs and stories, whilst also working with the children’s own interests to build our program.
Our Forest school inspired areas- Walks in the local community, our outdoor space at pre school, the fields and walking paths surrounding pre school, and the parish field.
We will be looking to hold a forest school inspired taster session during the first week of December (final details to follow). For those of you whose children that already attend on that day please ensure they have weather appropriate clothing: examples below for autumn winter:
Children should wear a base layer under their clothes, this could be a long sleeved top and leggings, or tights
Long sleeve top and trousers
Warm coat
Waterproofs top and bottoms
Waterproof gloves
Waterproof shoes\wellies with warm socks

If you would be interested in attending Forest school inspired on Wednesday afternoons in the New Year, kindly drop an email of expression of interest to Jude who will keep track of attendance numbers.
